Hyperliquid vs dYdX

The two most recognizable onchain perpetuals platforms, compared honestly. Hyperliquid built its own L1 for speed; dYdX moved to its own Cosmos app-chain. The market has voted with volume — here is where each still wins. Not financial advice.

Architecture

Hyperliquid runs a bespoke Layer 1 with a fully onchain order book, ~0.2s blocks and no gas fees for trading. dYdX v4 runs a Cosmos-SDK app-chain with an in-memory order book that batches to chain. Both achieve exchange-like speed; Hyperliquid's tighter stack has translated into lower latency in practice.

Fees

Hyperliquid: 0.035% taker / 0.01% maker, no gas, plus builder-code discounts (4% via BuyHype). dYdX v4: dynamic taker fees around 0.02-0.05% tiered by volume with maker rebates on some tiers. Makers can do better on dYdX; plain takers are roughly comparable.

Volume and market share

Hyperliquid dominates onchain perp volume today — roughly 58% of onchain perp DEX fees, versus single digits for dYdX v4. That gap shows in depth: tighter books and more liquid majors on Hyperliquid, though dYdX retains niches in some pairs and its community is active.

Tokens and value capture

HYPE's fee-backed Assistance Fund buyback-and-burn is a direct value-capture loop with real revenue. DYDX earns staking rewards from protocol fees distributed to validators/stakers, with different distribution mechanics. BuyHype tracks HYPE's revenue, P/E and buyback yield live on the valuation page.

UX and ecosystem

Hyperliquid offers spot, perps, HIP-3 builder markets (stocks/FX/commodities), prediction markets and an EVM. dYdX offers perps on its own chain with a mobile app and strong brand recognition from its Ethereum days. Both are usable; Hyperliquid's surface is broader today.

Bottom line

If you want the deepest onchain perp liquidity and the most integrated ecosystem, Hyperliquid is the default in 2026. dYdX remains a credible alternative with a different governance and fee model. For the HYPE buy decision specifically, use BuyHype's live signal rather than platform loyalty.
