Is Hyperliquid safe?

A straight answer on Hyperliquid's safety: how custody works, what the validator setup means, what happened during the 2025 JELLY incident, and which risks remain. Security is a spectrum, not a certificate — here is the evidence on both sides. Not financial advice.

Custody: you keep your keys

Hyperliquid is non-custodial. Assets sit in on-chain wallets you control; there is no centralized pool of user deposits an attacker can drain in one shot. The catch is that self-custody moves the risk to you — lost keys, phishing links and malicious approvals become your responsibility.

The chain and validators

Trading runs on Hyperliquid's own Layer 1 with roughly 28 active validators — a permissioned set that is more centralized than Ethereum but which has operated without downtime-related losses so far. Validator centralization is a real trade-off: it buys speed and cheap trading, and it concentrates power over the network.

The 2025 JELLY incident

In March 2025 a trader manipulated the low-liquidity JELLY market, pushing the HLP vault (which provides liquidity to perp markets) to a reported ~$4.6M loss. Validators voted to unwind the position and recover the funds — a precedent that worked in users' favor, but also proof that the system's defenses can be tested. Treat it as an honest blemish, not a disqualifier.

What protects you

Open, verifiable on-chain balances; no gas fees that attackers could front-run on your orders; a battle-tested order book through multiple volatility spikes; and a community of data tools (like BuyHype) that track TVL, revenue, funding and buyback live, making anomalies visible fast.

What does not protect you

Smart-contract risk never goes to zero; a small validator set could, in a worst case, act against users; manipulated low-liquidity markets have caused losses before; and the fixed withdrawal fee plus vesting supply are economic, not security, risks. No exchange — centralized or decentralized — is 'safe' in the absolute sense.

How BuyHype weighs this

BuyHype's Bayesian verdict includes a Risk dimension that weighs exactly these factors — validator concentration, incident history, and market-manipulation exposure — alongside fundamentals and valuation. Check the live signal and the methodology page for how each factor moves the probability.
